The sluggiest annual miniatures extravaganza. 2021-2023.

Slug Wizards was a sort of “event” that ran for three consecutive years (2021 to 2023) (it was mostly hosted on Instagram; I’m not active there anymore and no longer maintain an account). Each year, anyone with interest was invited to make and paint miniature figurines based on a theme. If you’re familiar with Warhammer or D&D miniatures, that’s sort of the idea. Year one was “Slug Wizards,” year two was “Squid Gnomes,” and year three was “Slug Wizards: Hunted.” Individuals from all across the globe participated. We raised over $1200 for charity. People made cool stuff. It was most excellent.

I (Bryan) – with contributions from the miniature modeling and RPG communities in which I had established myself – created two zines. A fictional universe was born, one in which the great sorcerer Thubja At’theb accidentally caused a cataclysmic event that resulted in the creation of the first Slug Wizards. Great cities were built on the backs of gargantuan snails. Wars were fought between these cities, but as the snails crawled further away from one another, war became difficult; great wastelands were left in the snails’ wakes, stripped of the vegetation the Snail-Cities required in great amount to sustain themselves. Mysterious, reclusive Squid Gnomes ascended from caverns below the earth and engaged in impish behaviors. And finally, Slug Wizard hunters travelled to the Slug Wizard World from dimensions beyond, lured by the precious and very valuable magical mucopolysaccharides (…slime) produced by Slug Wizard beings.

You can find the zines at the link on this site. They’re both free to download. The first is an exercise in nasty, crusty, punk photocopier vibes, and contains ideas for spells that can be used (with some tweaking!) in whatever RPGs or miniatures games you might play. The second was my attempt at mimicing the style and design of the “100s” run of White Dwarf Magazine.

I also recorded a mini-album of chiptune-style music. It’s the “soundtrack” to a non-existent Game Boy or NES-style video game of Slug Wizard. Oh, look – here it is:

I handed the reins of everything Slug Wizard to a couple of folks, but due to life circumstances, nothing further has happened with Slug Wizards.

This is the second version of the Slug Wizard Website. If you’re a returning visitor and was surprised at the difference, thank you for checking in so long after the buzz died away. The first site just never felt quite right, honestly. It was certainly functional, but this one feels better to me (even if my typographical choices are a little hard to read). And since at this point the site exists as a historical document, it’s a bit easier to manage a custom site. No integration with APIs and whozits and whatitz and all that.

I hope you find some things here that inspire you. Feel free to write me anytime at slugwizards@gmail.com.
